HELLSING RAISING
[The First page shows the pic of Alucard from the OAV Poster with the Caption “THRONE OF BLOOD: Alucard is sitting pretty for his brand new resurrection.”]
Anime Insider: We have Got to know-- Exactly How much new Hellsing Anime Are we Getting?
Yasuyuki Ueda: Well, it’s a three-year project and we hope to animate the entire manga series, starting over from the Beginning. Expect 2 Ova’s Per Manga Volume at 35 Minutes a Piece. [Taking into account The Dawn, that after V2 There were more Chapter’s Per Volume, and they may make some Filler/ Fight Extension to get to the Number of eps they want. at this Estimate, expect 22 - 26 Episodes]
AI: So, How much longer will the Manga Run?
Kouta Hirano: I’d always planned it out as 10 Volumes, to be honest. It’ll probably take another two years to finish those last two volumes.
YU: Which is why we’re taking three years with the anime Series! It sounds like a huge project, and we’re just getting started, but we’re convinced this will be something very special.
AI: What will be Different in the OVA?
YU: Well, we have a lot more freedom to make it more faithful to the original manga and the budget is much higher, also we have direct control over the animation quality, which is a big part of this new OVA. [Plus, no Incognito! And I hope any Characters that they will have to make up for the OVA have Pants!!]
AI: What made you decide to make a new Animation?
YU: I’ve always been a huge fan of Hellsing; the manga is so intense, so emotional, so incredible, that I wanted to see it come to life as accurately as possible. The Original Anime series was good, but we started on it long before Hirano was anywhere near being done with the manga series, so we had to tell a different story initially to finish the show out because there was no way he’d be done with the manga story before we finished the anime. So basically, now we can go back and animate the original manga story, and be faithful to the original story.
AI: in the Manga right now, Alucard and the Hellsing Organization are dealing with the Millennium Nazis, Will that be the Final Story arc in the Series?
KH: Yes, it will be. The Final three Volumes… Volume eight of the manga is done, but hasn’t been compiled yet. But volumes nine and 10 will finish the story line out and will also complete the Hellsing story entirely. [When he says Volume 8 is done, he could mean that CH 9 was the last Chapter. Or CH 10 will be the last, he’s finished it, it’s just sitting there waiting to be published]
AI: Hellsing was a huge success in America; did that have any effect on the decision to make a new Anime?
YU: Well, really the reason I’m making this new OVA is because I love Hellsing so much, and I really feel like this is going to be something special. But yes, the American response has been important. Obviously in order to animate something like this, something so elaborate, it’s going to take a lot of Money. If the American interest wasn’t there, we wouldn’t have the budget we do, which to be fair, is very big. [In America, Pioneer (Now Geneon) expected to sell 7000 DVDs of The First Volume of Hellsing; they sold 40,000 In the First 2 Weeks! Making Hellsing V1 Their best Selling DVD that Year, and If I am Not mistaken, is still Geneon's Top Selling DVD set. That’s how much of a Success it was here]
AI What Moments from the Manga are you most looking forward to seeing animated?
KH: Oh, anything that wasn’t in the first anime series, to be sure!
YU: Yes, anything that wasn’t in the first anime series that was in the manga. [Amen]
AI: Was it more difficult to adapt Hirano’s art style, now that you’re trying to be more faithful to the manga?
YU: Yes, of Course. We have a much bigger budget now, but we’re also trying to be careful with how we adapt these characters. I really want this to look like the original manga, and the manga is so detailed, so it’s going to cost a lot more. Thankfully we have the money to do it.
[This Section had Pictures of the manga Next to it, the one of Integral From The back of V1, one of Walter from the back of V4 and Alucard from the front of V2, the caption Read: “GUN PLAY: Expect the Ova Version of Alucard to look much more like this than the TV version.”]
AI: Are you planning on doing anything with the Special Side story “Crossfire” which deals with two Catholic Priestesses?
KH: Well, in the Latest Young King OURS they’re fighting Alucard right now, in the main storyline.
AI: Really?
KH: Yes! I hope the Fans like it a lot.
AI: Do you plan on animating that side story, or doing it as a bonus Short?
YU: Well, if it fits into the anime series, then yes. We’ll consider doing it as a bonus, but since those characters fit into the overall storyline, they’ll probably show up later on when they enter the main story, rather than being just side characters...
AI: Do you plan on incorporating the Manga’s Comedic side stories into the OVA series?
KH: I think the fans would want me to leave those in, really. I mean, I do those when I hit a breaking point. Hellsing is a very serious manga and when I eventually hit a point where I can’t be serious anymore, I draw those comedy side stories; the fans love them, I think, so I kinda have to leave them you know?
YU: If they fit the storyline, if they feel right, we’ll leave them in.
AI: Will all the Violence from the Manga be intact in the New OVA?
YU: well, some things work in manga and some things work in animation. Hellsing to me, the terror isn’t about blood, it’s psychological. The horror is all mental. So if we hold back a little on the blood… the Real horror of the series is about Psychological terror, and that’s what I hope to put across. The blood and violence is less important to me than that.
[Side note: Next to a picture of The V5 manga Cover “BLOOD IN, BLOOD OUT: the new OVA will not only be darker, but the Violence of the manga will remain intact.”]
AI: do you plan on improving upon the Original TV series?
YU: well, obviously we have the entire Hellsing story now, so we can be much more faithful to the original manga. Also, we’re working with a new Animation Studio [Studio SATELIGHT] and a much higher budget, so the animation quality will be spectacular!
AI: Hirano-san, how much of a hand do you have in this New OVA series?
KH: Well, I’m a manga Author. I don’t know a lot about anime. I absolutely trust Ueda-san to do a fantastic job and bring my manga to life. I really don’t know anything about anime; I don’t meddle, unless they ask me to!
YU: I have a Fundamental understanding of Hirano-san’s Work, and if I have any questions about what I’m doing, obviously we go to him, but overall, he leaves it to me.
AI: Hirano-san, how’d you get your start in Manga?
KH: I started out in art School, learning to draw manga. Initially I was drawing only Doujinshi, [Coyote, Angel Dust, Doc’s Story, A Cowboy bebop Hentai and a Meitantei Conan Hentai to name a Few] but then I moved on and Started on Hellsing.
AI: What have been your biggest inspirations?
But my biggest inspiration as a student was katushiro otomo’s Akira Manga. [Considered by many to be one of The Great Manga/Anime Masterpieces of all Time]
AI: Did you see Steamboy?
KH: Oh yes! I liked Steamboy very much, but Akira has a special place in my heart. It’s what inspired me to become a manga creator in the first place. Steamboy to me is very different from Akira; Akira is nostalgic, something I keep very close. Steamboy seems… Different. It’s still spectacular, but very different
[Steamboy was Created and Produced by the Same People who did Akira]
AI: What do you think of Manga Today?
KH: I’m too busy working on Hellsing to read manga!
AI: Ueda-san, how do you feel about Anime today?
YU: I think there’s a lot of Great Product out there right now, to be frank. There’s some really good shows out there, but sometimes, I feel like the American influence on anime is really showing itself! So much so that I think there’s actually a movement towards really turning anime back towards being truly “Japanese,” and adding more of our culture in.
It might be less accessible, but really we’re more interested in making something that’s going to appeal to a broad Audience and also retain elementary Japanese concepts rather than just being a really commercial product. Hopefully Hellsing Ultimate OVA will really set the bar Higher for anime!
